Knott Street Residence

The owners came to us wanting an updated kitchen and an additional bathroom for their 1930s house, which had a great exterior but suffered from an outdated layout.

Together, we looked at their house holistically, finding underutilized spaces and rearranging them to suit the owners’ lifestyle.  Without expanding the footprint, we combined two bedrooms to create a master suite and a new hall powder room.  A widened archway between the living room and hallway allows the whole house to feel seamlessly connected.  On the second floor, we enlarged and remodeled the kids’ bathroom by reclaiming adjacent space and using the same bright palette found in the master bath.  Throughout, more modern details with a timeless feel respect the vocabulary of the original house.

One of the most successful moments of the project was the transformation of an underused breakfast nook into a mudroom, creating a new family entrance with dedicated cubbies.
